About the Universal Arts
Association (UMA)
Universal
Martial Arts Association was founded in 1972 by
Grandmaster Whan Ki Choi who holds a 9th Dan Black Belt
in both Tae Kwon Do and Hapkido. Universal Martial Arts
is affiliated with the
World Tae
Kwon
Do Federation and the Korean
Hapkido Association. The overall goals of this
organization is to
provide
professional and comprehensive instructions in these
combined martial arts which are proven both effective
and dynamic methods of self-defense. Styles
taught at this association remain distinct under
Grandmaster Choi's professional and disciplined
guidance. Both beginners and advanced students
gain a unique understanding of self-defense, as well
as the proper discipline of mind
and body
in these very popular
Korean
Arts. Students at this association will develop
the innate ability and power to study and understand
this dynamic universe. Schools all around the United
States are recognized by the association and the
classes are structured
and taught
under Grandmaster Choi's supervision, basic concepts
and philosophies. |

We have
studied and trained for more than 20 years as part of
the requirements to qualify for the World Tae Kwon Do
Federation teaching license. Now our primary
task is to assist the Tae Kwon Do Student in being the
best he or she can be. Our carefully structured
programs go far beyond punching, blocking, kicking and
self-defense techniques. At the same time, as we
help develop effective self-defense skills, we provide
a comprehensive program of personal development.
It is our goal to raise the quality of life for all of
our students in every way.
At Spring UMA our mission is:
1.) to provide the finest instruction in the mental,
physical and character building aspects of martial
arts.
2.) to provide personal instruction in every class.
3.) to provide the cleanest and most professional
facilities in the area.
4.) to create an environment that gives each
individual the opportunity to pursue and achieve a
greater level of personal success and freedom.
The Student's best interest is always uppermost in our
minds. Our instructors are always ready to help in
any way during training. We are happy to discuss
Student progress at any time.

Philosophy Of
Taekwondo
Taekwondo
(also correctly spelled Tae Kwon Do or TaeKwon Do) originated in Korea centuries ago
and is now one of the
most popular and effective martial art in the world.
Taekwondo,
based on the Yin-Yang theory of Oriental philosophy, is a
physical expression of the human will for survival and
activity to fulfill the spiritual desire of all beings.
With its stress on the coordination of
Dan-Jun Breathing
with body movements, Taekwondo improves the heart, the
circulation of the blood and breathing system, which also
improves digestion and metabolism, as well as developing
"Ki" (your inner, innate energy).
Physically, one can develop coordination, agility, and
muscle tone while generating energy in every organ of the
body to help maintain excellent health and to keep in
shape through continuous training.
Mentally, Taekwondo transforms ones character into a
strong spirit which provides confidence, patience and
modesty. Then one will eventually gain an outstanding
personality as a leader of society.

The
"Yin and Yang" Theory of Taekwondo
Taekwondo is
based on the philosophical concept of "Yin-Yang", which
evolved thousands of years ago in the orient. Under this
concept, everything is bi-polarized. For Example, the
universe consists of the
earth and heavens, though unlimited in space, is circular
in motion. The day ("Yang") followed by night ("Yin" in
perpetuity, similarly a person consists of body and mind,
though endless in soul can be considered a microcosm, a
small universe included motion and stillness, emptiness
and fullness, hardness and softness. Therefore, the
universe or the microcosm is the world of change and
cooperation, the world of conflict and coordination.
Since
Taekwondo springs from the "Yin-Yang" philosophy, the
student should apprehend the basic principle of Taekwondo
which are composed of motion and stillness, fullness and
emptiness, and hardness and softness, in accordance with
the thought of "Yin-Yang". So the person who practices it
continuously will enjoy the most natural state, the
ultimate harmony of "Yin-Yang", balanced physical and
mental health, and a long life. |
